Examinations and preventive care

Dental problems often develop without pain. Decay between teeth, early gum disease, cracks in existing fillings and changes to the soft tissues can all progress well before you notice them.

Regular examinations give us a record to compare against. At each visit we check your teeth, gums and existing dental work, take radiographs where clinically indicated, and talk through anything that has changed since your last appointment. Where treatment is appropriate we explain why, what it involves, and what is likely to happen if you choose to wait.

The interval between your check-ups is set according to your own risk of decay and gum disease rather than a fixed schedule. For some patients that is six months; for others it is longer or shorter.

Children’s dentistry and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Children’s teeth and jaws change considerably between the baby and adult dentition. Regular examinations let us monitor those changes, and give us time to talk with you and your child about brushing, diet, and habits such as thumb sucking.

Eligible children can access up to $1,158 of basic dental services over two consecutive calendar years under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Eligibility is determined by Services Australia rather than by the practice. We can check your child’s eligibility and remaining balance before the appointment, and we bulk bill treatment covered by the scheme.

Your first appointment

A first appointment is usually a comprehensive examination and takes around 45 minutes. It includes a review of your medical history and any medications you take, an examination of your teeth, gums, jaw joints and the soft tissues of your mouth, radiographs where clinically indicated, and a discussion of what we have found. If treatment is recommended you will leave with a written treatment plan listing item numbers, so you can check your entitlements with your health fund before proceeding.

If you have had dental treatment elsewhere, bringing recent radiographs or a treatment summary can save time and avoid repeat imaging.

Fees and payment

Fees depend on the treatment involved and are given to you in writing before treatment begins. We accept most health funds and can process your claim at the practice. Flexible payment options are available — please ask our reception team.

New patients with eligible health cover may be able to use our gap-free new patient offer. Full details and eligibility are on the offer page.
